相互指责：谁向谁发动了网络攻击？

据报道，在过去的几个月里，美国政府指责中国在网络上攻击了美国政府和私人企业的数据库。现在，轮到中国发起指控了。中国国防部今天早些时候发表的声明指出，去年中国每月遭受的网络攻击平均为144,000起，而美国要对其中63%负责。中国说：“现在，谁才是那个坏家伙呢？”

 “总所周知，几乎每天都会发生使用（偷来的）IP地址进行黑客攻击的行为。”中国国防部代表耿雁生说道。从根本上来说，他说的是：“每个人都在这么做……您又怎么能知道……？”

Hanya Tinggal 1,5 Derajat Saja Sebelum Semuanya Mencair

Sekarang sudah ada angkanya. Ilmuwan dari Unversitas Oxford mengatakan hanya dengan kenaikan suhu 1,5°C akan cukup untuk membawa dunia ke dalam skenario kiamat.

Kenaikan suhu ini mulai mencairkan lapisan es di Siberia. Wilayah ini meliputi sekitar seperempat dari total luas permukaan daratan di belahan bumi utara, mencairnya lapisan es di sana bakal melepaskan ratusan gigaton gas metana dan karbon dioksida ke atmosfer kita.

Walaupun para ilmuwan mengklaim bahwa proses pencairan es seperti ini masih akan berlangsung puluhan tahun mendatang, namun  faktanya tetap: dalam spektrum miliaran tahun, wilayah hunian manusia akan semakin minim dan kerap mendatangkan bencana.

Mari bandingkan waktu kita di bumi dengan stalaktit dan stalagmit yang dipelajari di Siberia. Semua telah terbentuk selama ratusan ribu tahun dari lapisan es yang mencair dan menetes ke dalam gua. Melalui zaman es dan berbagai peradaban, masa-masa pemanasan dan perang, semua telah tumbuh dan menyusut karena pengaruh lingkungan. Para ilmuwan dapat mengukur setiap stalaktit dan stalagmit seperti seorang penebang pohon yang dapat menghitung umur pohon – dengan memotong pohonnya. Oil transport derailment forces mass evacuation

In a small town about 155 miles east of Montreal, a train transporting crude oil derailed, resulting in the evacuation of over 1,000 people, and at least one confirmed dead.

Several people were reported missing after train cars carrying the oil exploded near the town of Lac-Megantic in eastern Quebec. Officials have already confirmed one dead, although that number is expected to climb. The explosions ignited a conflagration that shot flaming wreckage into the sky. Smoke could be seen for miles even hours after cleanup crews arrived.

"It's terrible," said Claude Bedard, a Lac-Megantic resident. "We've never seen anything like it. The Metro store, Dollarama, everything that was there is gone."

Authorities have yet to identify the cause of the accident.

Christian Blanchette, spokesperson for Environment Quebec, admits that a large, yet still undetermined amount of fuel spilled into a nearby river. "We have advised the local municipalities downstream to be careful if they take their water from the Chaudiere River," he said.

Perimeters were set up as firefighters and rescue workers from several neighboring municipalities, including Saint-Georges-de-Beauce and Sherbrook, fought to put out the flames. A fleet of trucks from Maine were even deployed to Lac-Megantic, which is roughly 135 miles (217 kilometers) north of the U.S. border.

The train, which was destined Maine, belongs to Montreal Maine & Atlantic. According to the company’s website, they own more than 500 miles (800 kilometers) of track servicing the northeast corridor, including Maine, Vermont, New Brunswick, and Quebec.

Meteor & Manusia yang Salah Arah

Sebuah meteor jatuh di Chelyabinsk, Rusia dengan kecepatan 18,6 mil   per detik pada hari Jum'at. Mereka beruntung karena meteor itu hancur di atmosfer, padahal ukurannya sama besar dengan  gedung berlantai 15!

Apakah mungkin ada pihak-pihak yang  memang mengharapkan peristiwa ini terjadi? Kita dibesarkan dengan film-film  sci-fi yang tidak begitu paham dengan meteor. Sehingga yang kita pikirkan hanya seperti dalam film Amageddon dan Deep Impact.  Ketika hari Sabtu tiba, ada sekelompok orang yang merasa begitu senang karena telah selamat dari hantaman meteor itu.   Sementara yang lain terkejut karena menyadari bahwa sistem pertahanan rudal canggih kita terbukti tidak berguna sama sekali.  (Ternyata peledakan meteor di luar angkasa  hanya ada dalam film-film Hollywood. Padahal, sudah triliunan dolar telah  dihabiskan untuk industri pertahanan).

Sebenarnya orang cenderung menganggap diri mereka sebagai makhluk yang kuat dan berkuasa. Dalam film-film, para pahlawan selalu berotot dan memiliki akses ke peralatan berteknologi tinggi paling anyar. Mereka tidak pernah tertembak. Selalu punya kekasih. Dan pada akhirnya, tepat sebelum tiba di bagian akhir, film entah bagaimana mereka dapat menyelamatkan dunia.

Tapi ini adalah sebuah fantasi! Manusia adalah makhluk bodoh dan egois yang jarang menggunakan teknologi untuk kebaikan; dan lebih suka menggunakannya  untuk saling membunuh. Prestasi terbesar umat manusia, sampai saat ini adalah dapat bertahan hidup selama ribuan tahun, meskipun sifat nyata genetik kita adalah haus darah. Tentu saja, manusia telah menemukan berbagai hal besar. Dari internet sampai kapitalisme. Dari Java hingga bisbol. Tetapi apakah inovasi-inovasi tersebut membantu kita untuk maju, atau malah menenggelamkan kita lebih dalam ke jurang kekecewaan?

Pahlawan-pahlwan Hollywood itu tidak ada. Bruce Willis tidak menunggu untuk lepas landas dalam pesawat ruang angkasa demi menanamkan nuklir ke meteor, dan (beberan) menyelamatkan bumi dari kehancuran termakan api. Sepertinya kita sudah banyak belajar, tapi sebenarnya kita tidak belajar apa-apa. Kita takut untuk menghadapi kenyataan bahwa manusia bukanlah  pahlawan. Kita bodoh berpikir  bahwa kita dapat menaklukkan apa pun yang kita sudah kita tetapkan sebagai tujuan kita. Bumi. Luar Angkasa. Tidak ada yang luput dari kekuasaan manusia.

How Europe and Central Asia can improve their energy infrastructures

Europe and parts of Central Europe, though forerunners in the green energy revolution, can certainly learn from their predecessors who have failed. Fair pricing, government intervention, and careful monitoring will help these regions improve their energy infrastructures overtime, and ensure victory for their technological revolution.  

According to a recent study conducted by the World Bank Group, despite internal improvements over the last twenty years, a vast number of countries across Europe and Central Asia remain energy exhaustive.

Don’t worry – there’s always room for improvement!

Through trust-worthy government intervention, the institution of a sustainable set of energy standards, and identifying high-need areas, these countries can drastically cut their consumption rates, thus cutting into our overwhelming carbon levels.

But why Europe and Central Asia? Why not North America or Southeast Asia?

In-efficiency, mostly. Over 60% of Europe and Central Asia’s energy is lost during processing! That means they’re forced to burn more fossil fuels. Mine more coal. Drill for more oil. Just to get the same output they should be getting in the first place!

At least we’ve identified a major problem in the region’s energy infrastructure. Once the problem is resolved, consumers should see huge savings – not to mention cleaner air and water.

Developing alternative energy programs and working towards improving existing efficiencies will allow countries to enjoy energy independence and security. In addition, businesses will become more competitive on the global market, creating more jobs and luring more private equity investors than ever thought possible!

Remember – no matter how comfortable you feel with your country’s current energy infrastructure, there is always room for improvement! So get reading, and researching, and help make the world a better place.

Yen drops in value: are you tired of the fluctuating stock market? We are.

In the United States, the yen dropped to its lowest value in over four years, prompting a wave of brokers to unload their shares in gold and oil. By day’s end, however, the market recovered and both the S&P 500 the Dow Jones closed out at record highs. So why the massive hit to the yen?

Japanese investment firms have been gobbling up assets overseas, so the yen’s slide had more of an impact across global markets than it may have had in the past, economists claim.

The U.S. dollar, on the other hand, has remained sturdy due to the country’s recent rise in employment. That consistency puts pressure on firms invested in other currencies, who may no longer be able to afford the cost of U.S. goods and services.

"Despite signs of slower U.S. growth here in the second quarter, the U.S. labor market continues to improve,” says Marc Chandler, head of global currency strategy for Brown Brothers Harriman, a financial institution that consult with individuals and businesses on investment opportunities. “Japanese investors were already selling the yen on expectations that [others] would sell as the Bank of Japan's stimulus measures displaced them from the local bond market.”

According to the Ministry of Finance, Japanese firms invested $3.1 billion, or 309.9 billion yen, in overseas bonds the week leading up to May 3^rd.

The Japanese currency fell to 101.98 yen per dollar, the lowest since 2008, and with the passing of the 100 benchmark, economists expect the yen to fall further. Some are predicting the dollar to rise to 105 yen this summer, and peak as high as 110 by the end of the fiscal year.

As the U.S. undergoes rapid employment expansion, foreign money is expected to come pouring in. On Friday, the S&P 500 closed up 7.03 points, to 1,633.70, while the Dow Jones rose 35.87 points, to 15,118.49 – both record highs.

Wow – up, down, up down. To call the stock market ‘unpredictable’ would be an understatement.

Over time, the price of commodities like oil, gas, and gold will fluctuate more than a theme park roller coaster. So smoggy in Singapore: air pollution hits decade high

Forest fires originating from Indonesia's Sumatra Island has laid a blanket of smog over Singapore, sending most citizens scampering to buy protective masks and inhalers.

Singapore's air quality has teetered on "unhealthy" classification for some time now, but with the recent smog, air pollution has swollen to its highest levels in over a decade. A reading of 155 on the Pollutant Standards Index was taken Monday, while readings general fall between 104 and 123. (101 in considered “unhealthy,” if you were wondering.)

The smog is a reoccurring problem, beginning around midyear when Indonesian farmers clear brush by lighting fires. It’s begun to strain diplomatic relations. The Singaporean government is fed up with Indonesia’s inability to enact political sanctions on farmers caught illegally maintaining their fields.

The dry summer months have added to the problem, sparking spontaneous fires on a semi-regular basis. Firefighters are working over-time, in extreme conditions – and making little progress.

So far, neighboring countries like Malaysia have only been slightly affected. Pollution levels have yet to exceed the “unhealthy” limit. (But it’s only a matter of time…)

Sumarto Suharno, spokesperson for Indonesia’s Forest Ministry, claims the government is striving to educate farmers about agricultural alternatives to traditional ‘slash-and-burn’ techniques. “We have been able to reduce the regional haze problem significantly for years with help from local communities and will continue to undertake all efforts to prevent it from spreading," he said.

But will it be enough?

How many children will be diagnosed with chronic asthma before we get serious about the poisons we’re pumping into the atmosphere?

Pollution isn’t a regional issue. It can’t be tackled by any one government. Winds disperse carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases evenly throughout the atmosphere. It’s going to take cooperation. It’s going to take years of study, expert debate, and a willingness to work towards a unified goal: an end to global warming!
