Perusahaan batu bara Patriot baru-baru ini mengajukan dokumen ke pengadilan untuk membatalkan sekitar 1,6 miliar dolar manfaat kesehatan bagi ribuan penambang batu bara Amerika. Langkah itu muncul sebagai upaya terakhir untuk menghindari Bab 11 Kitab Undang-Undang Kebangkrutan. Hal ini membuktikan lagi bahwa bisnis besar lebih mementingkan pemegang saham daripada pekerja kerah biru mereka sendiri.

Menurut Patriot Corp , Serikat Pekerja Tambang (UMWA) beroperasi dengan upah tenaga kerja yang jauh lebih tinggi,  sehingga membuat perusahaan sulit untuk tetap bertahan secara kompetitif  di dalam industri energi yang kejam ini. Patriot menuntut " aturan kerja yang lebih fleksibel dan struktur upah tenaga kerja yang lebih rendah secara signifikan." Alias bekerja lebih lama dengan bayaran lebih sedikit. Adakah yang menyambar kesempatan itu?

"Tindakan yang kami ambil hari ini diperlukan untuk kelangsungan hidup Patriot dan mempertahankan lebih dari 4.000 lapangan kerja , " kata Chief Executive Bennett Hatfield, dalam pembelaanya terhadap pemotongan manfaat pensiunan tersebut.

Patriot memang mengusulkan sebuah pilihan alternatif.  Alih-alih memotong manfaat, perusahaan menawarkan serikat bagi hasil yang dikenal sebagai Asosiasi Karyawan Penerima Manfaat Sukarela (VEBA). Namun, pemimpin serikat menyadari bahwa Patriot mungkin ingin mengajukan kebangkrutan. Celah hukum akan memungkinkan mereka dan perusahaan energi lain seperti Patriot, untuk menghemat miliaran dolar dengan menghilangkan pensiun karyawan. Pria dan wanita yang telah mendedikasikan hidup mereka untuk tambang disingkirkan demi melindungi harga saham.

Akankah CEO mengorbankan jet pribadinya? Akankah Presiden Patriot melupakan bonus tahunannya untuk kebaikan perusahaan?

Tentu saja tidak!

最近出现了令人信服的证据，将中国人民解放军与黑客攻击联系了起来，表明在过去七年里，攻击对象超过了100所美国公司。虽然被窃取的具体信息还有待公布，但人们相信，市场趋势和正在开发的科技的相关信息是主要的攻击目标。显然，这让中国政府在全球经济竞争中获得了极大的优势。通过查看竞争对手的会计账簿和研发专利，中国就可以操纵市场，进而完成自己的竞标。

这将会导致什么？价格将会出现波动，并且令人难以预测。正如我们大多数人所知道的那样，多数廉价制品都来自类似中国这样的国家。美国政府以及全球大多数的超级大国，都严重依赖于中国的出口业，中国获得的任何附加优势都可能让经济出现永久性的失衡。

当然，中国政府的发言人在不断反驳这些报道，声称中国从未参与这些企业窃听案。事实上，他们还暗示中国也可能是黑客攻击的牺牲者，进而努力地转移人们的注意力！

现在的问题是：针对这些关于黑客的指控，世界该作何反应？正如前文提到的，中国在全球经济舞台上扮演了一个关键的角色。然而，正如任何一名优秀的导演都会告诉您的那样，没有任何一个角色会比剧作本身更重要。（也许，除了《麦克白》之外）世界需要中国政府意识到这一点，而不是促成经济对峙。如果这真的成为现实，那世界肯定将陷入“割下自己的鼻子来和脸过不去”的境地。国家经济，特别是对那些不具备制造优势的国家而言，将饱受痛苦。他们将成为中国出口业的人质——为了生存，被迫向不合理的要求让步。

让科技“不受约束”

我在此提出这一法律辩论，是因为它广受关注。应该让谁来决定什么是对社会最有益的：政府，还是个人？在未来的能源政策和气候变化方面，应该让谁来决定什么是对我们星球最有益的：政府，还是个人？也许，这需要依赖于双方建立合理的平衡。不管怎样，为了传播与绿色能源有关的思想、见解和发展，我们需要类似于互联网这样的工具。如果我们拱手让出这一工具，那么，我们也就失去了在全球范围内开展合作的能力。NRGLab和其他具有环保意识的团体的创新工作将被忽视。无知将像癌症一样蔓延。我们的世界，以及我们的自由、创造力和热情，都将逐渐衰竭。

New energy bill introduced to inept U.S. congress: how will they vote?

Nowadays, it seems nearly impossible for the split American congress to pass any legislation whatsoever, let alone energy reform. However, Senators Jeanne Shaheen from New Hampshire (D) and Rob Portman from Ohio (R) aren’t deterred. They believe that by maximizing energy efficiency, not only will green technology help solve global warming, it will stimulate job creation, too. Regardless of political party, everyone can agree: more jobs are good.

This week, Shaheen and Portman are reintroducing their Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act (ESICA) to congress, a bi-partisan bill which has already been endorsed by more than 200 businesses, trade associations, and advocacy groups. ESICA promotes the usage of green technology in order to save consumers money, reduce overall carbon emissions, and sever America’s dependency on foreign oil.

Superior green technologies like the SH-Box by NRGLab are close to being, if not already, available on the mass market. 6.      Establish a program within the DOE – SupplySTAR – to maximize the efficiency of corporate supply chains.

8.      Install a nation-wide infrastructure of electric vehicle charging stations.

“Energy efficient buildings must be a cornerstone of national energy policy as the building sector remains the nation’s single largest energy consumer,” said a representative of Owens Corning, an insulation manufacturer and one of many companies that stand to gain (financially speaking) from the bill’s passing. “We’re keenly aware of the energy savings, environmental improvements, and job creation opportunities derived from strong energy efficient buildings, policies and practices.”

Although Shaheen and Portman have spent months winning endorsements for their bill from such elite organizations as the Union of Concerned Scientists and the U.S Chamber of Commerce, in congress, nothing is a sure thing.
